Solutions

TenCate Protective Fabrics leverages global market knowledge to adapt and certify technologies and products across product markets – from emergency response, to industrial safety, to military and police.

Due to our broad portfolio of products and our user-centric design philosophy, TenCate Protective Fabrics has products designed for each specific need. In this way we’re able to help our customers select the solution that truly suits them best.

Apart from the products in our workwear portfolio, all our protective fabrics have a common performance indicator called flame resistance (FR). Two technologies are employed to make FR fabrics.

FR Treated Fabrics

are based on cellulose (e.g. cotton or TENCEL™ Lyocell) and blended with (recycled) polyester, paramid or polyamide. These fabrics get their FR properties from a chemical treatment applied in such a way that the fibres become fully penetrated and the treatment is bonded throughout the fabric. As a result of this treatment, the fabric becomes flame retardant and keeps this property throughout its life cycle. FR treated fabrics are mainly used in the metal and steel industry to protect against heat and metal splashes, as well as in the general industry and utilities that require multinorm protection.

Inherent FR Fabrics

contain fibres that have flame resistant properties in and of themselves. The most common FR fibres used in protective clothing are aramids and modacrylics. Aramids provide excellent protection against flame, heat, chemical resistance and low molecular weight. The higher the performance level of the fibre, the lower the weight you need to achieve a certain level of protection. That is why aramids are commonly used in work environments like the energy utility sector or – increasingly – in the petrochemical sector. Modacrylics are the most-used fibre for industrial solutions as they provide an optimal price-performance ratio that meets industrial end users’ demands.
